Gear Time Live 6: Camera Bags, Backpacks & Day Packs | Gear Time Live Every Thursday at 1pm MT

Kirk Keyes Gear Time, Vlog

Brendon and Drew discuss Camera Bag, Backpack, and Day Pack options you should consider! They talk about Crumpler, Shimoda, Matador, and Peak Design camera bags. Internal Camera Units (ICU) are covered as well and how they can be used to your advantage while travelling. Drew also has a collapsible “Doctor Bag” style case to show.

Drew discusses why he was a big fan of Peak Design camera packs, but he tells us why he now favors camera bags from Shimoda. He also does a deep dive into the Shimoda camera bags. Drew points out how tripods are not considered part of your carry-on items so you can bring them with you into the cabin. We also look at a Really Right Stuff lens pouch, the Range Pouch for lenses.

Near the end, we look at Aaron’s Mindshift MindShift Gear rotation180° Panorama Backpack.

If you need (or want) to carry a lot of gear, look into an actual backpacking pack. Kirk uses on to carry way too much gear, and it feels way better than any camera pack, due to the internal framing and suspension supports. He uses an Osprey Aether AG 70 liter pack. Look for a pack that has front access zipper in addition to being top loading. Kirk’s pack even has a compartment for a sleeping bag, which come in handy on those long nights when you are doing a time lapse.

Finally, Drew shows his LaCie portable hard drive that connects to his phone and allows him to control where the files are going during backup. It could free you up from carrying a laptop yet still give you the security of being able to back up your camera cards. He also shows a SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD.
