Todays Gear Time Topic – Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Tripod Head

Brendon Porter from Photog Adventures reviews his Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared tripod head that he uses for Landscape Photography and Astrophotography.
Royce Bair recommended the Manfrotto 410 Junior tripod head to us when we were hanging out with him at Mirror Lake, Utah. Brendon didn’t wait more than a few days before he got one.
Manfrotto claims the 410 Junior is the most precise 3-way geared head on the market. The 410 Junior is made of aluminum with easy to use ergonomic knobs. It weighs 2.7 lbs (1.22 kg) and can carry a payload of 11 lbs (5.0 kg). The knobs allow easy and fine adjustments for each axis of the camera’s position. And locks on the knobs prevent the head from accidentally being moved. The 410 Junior uses a Manfrotto 410PL quick release base plate, which is not Arca-Swiss compatible.

How to Mod for Manfrotto to Arca-Swiss adaptor

The 410PL base plate is a proprietary design, and while it works well, it is not compatible with Arca-Swiss or even other Manfrotto plates. So Brendon came up with a hack to adapt an Arca-Swiss plate the 410PL plate. He took a small piece of aluminum sheet and mounted it to the Manfrotto 410PL plate. Then he mounted an Arca-Swiss compatible quick release plate on top of the aluminum. So now Brendon can use his Arca-Swiss compatible camera L-bracket.

Speed of Adjustment

You can make rapid movements in each of the 3 axis can be made as the locks quickly disengage. So you can immediately make fine or large adjustments.

Rock Solid

The Manfrotto 410 Junior is large, but it is beefy. Despite the weight, Brendon is really glad he has this head. He likes shooting Macro Photography both in the landscape as well as the studio and this head makes fine adjustments super easy. Yes, the weight is a downer, but the precision makes up for it.

Rating –

Overall, the Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Tripod Head it’s a great buy. It’s not an inexpensive head, but Brendon found his used and saved a bit of cash.
